History
It was founded on May 17, 1865 as the International Telegraph Union, which makes it one of the oldest still operating international organizations.
The ITU was originally intended to help connect telegraph networks between countries, and its mandate has steadily expanded with the advent of new communication technologies; adopted its current name in 1934 to reflect its extended radio and telephone responsibilities. On November 15, 1947, the ITU concluded an agreement with the newly created United Nations to transform it into a specialized agency in the UN system, which formally entered into force on January 1, 1949.
