All about DSL

Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) is a technology that provides access to the Internet by transmitting digital data over ordinary copper telephone lines without interfering with voice services. A DSL line can transmit both data and voice signals simultaneously, which means you can use your phone while still connected to the Internet.

History of DSL

  • Initially it was thought that it was impossible to operate a conventional telephone line beyond the low speed limits (usually below 9600 bps).
  • In the 1950s, ordinary twisted-pair telephone cable frequently transmitted four megahertz (MHz) TV signals between studios, suggesting that such lines would be capable of transmitting many megabits per second.
  • One such track in the UK ran approximately 16 km between the BBC studios in Newcastle-upon-Tyne and the Pontop Pike broadcasting station.
