Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN) is a set of communication standards for the simultaneous digital transmission of voice, image, data, and other network services over traditional public switched telephone network circuits.
History of ISDN
ISDN was born out of necessity. Analog telephone networks are constantly failing and have proved to be unreliable for long distance calls.
In the 1960s, the system began moving to a packet-based digital switching system.
The United Nations-based International Telecommunications Union (ITU) began recommending ISDN in 1988 as a new system for operating companies to deliver data.
It took some time for the communication service providers to start offering ISDN. This was mainly due to the fact that the two majors at the time were running separate operating systems. National ISDN 1 (N1-2 for short) was created in the 1990s.
While this innovation can improve the quality of communication, it still took time to set an agreed standard.
Finally, manufacturers like Motorola and USRobotics have set out to make the transition easier for everyone.
ISDN was then launched throughout the United States. It has provided consumers with better prices and internet access with greater capacity. .
Currently, ISDN has been replaced by broadband internet connections such as DSL, WAN and cable modems. It is still used as a backup when the main lines fail.
