SBI is a public sector financial institution and multinational corporation. The bank has a market share of 23 percent in the banking sector by asset base and 25 percent in the deposit and loan business, making it the largest statutory banking and financial organization in India.
The Indian government owns SBI and it is the largest shareholder of SBI, holding approximately 62 percent of the shares or equity in SBI. History of SBI
The bank was founded in 1806 as the bank of Calcutta to provide the Indians with basic banking services.
In 1809, after granting a royal privilege, the bank was designated the Bank of Bengal.
The Bank of Bombay was founded in 1840 and the Bank of Madras in 1843.
These three merged banks were considered presidential banks.
One presidential bank was run by private subscribers and provincial governments.
Such banks obtained preferential rights to issue currency through the nation, which was then controlled by the Indian government during the 1861 period.
The three banks merged in 1921 and finally merged. It was later named the Imperial Bank of India.

The Indian government and the Indian reserve bank assumed joint control of the Imperial Bank of India in 1955.
