Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) is the global connection of circuit-switched telephone networks. It consists of telephone lines, fiber optic cables, microwave transmission links, cellular networks, communication satellites and submarine telephone cables, centrally connected so that every telephone in the world can communicate with everyone else.
History of the PSTN
Public switched telephone network is the collection of global switched telephone communication networks operating at the regional, national and local telephony levels.
The PSTN therefore provides a public transport infrastructure consisting of fiber optic cables, telephone lines, microwave transmissions, communication satellites, cellular transmissions and even submarine cables.
The first telephones designed had no network connections at all. Instead, they were private use solutions for paired communication.
In other words, it was not possible to call more than one location. Users who wanted to talk to many different people needed to have several different phones – each with its own unique purpose.
In the 1960s, voice calls began to be digitized and manual switching solutions were replaced by automatic electronic switching. Digital voice signals could share the same wire with other phone calls, and the masses’ ability to communicate grew.
