About the site
The site consists of a three-story Victorian townhouse and a two-story coach house. The carriage house housed the National Archives of Black Women’s History until 2014, when the National Park Service transferred files to the National Park Service Museum Resource Center in Landover, Maryland. The archives and research center on the property are open by appointment only.
Bethune lived in a tenement house in the years 1943-1955. She bought it for $ 15,500. Bethune lived on the third floor, and the National Council of Black Women occupied the first and second floors. The layout of the house has remained unchanged since Bethune lived there, and most of the furnishings are original and owned by Bethune and the National Science Center.
