Engineering Services Exam commonly known as ESE is conducted annually by UPSC to recruit engineers in four domains namely civil, mechanical, electrical, electronics and telecommunications for technical managerial posts. The exam consists of a two-stage written test followed by an interview.

ESE Exam Pattern

Candidates must ensure that they fulfill the eligibility criteria and admission in all the stages of the examination. Candidates are advised to check the complete details about IES exam pattern before starting the application form and preparation. The examination will be conducted as per the following scheme –

Phase-I – Engineering Services (Preliminary) Examination (Objective Type Papers) for selection of candidates for Main Examination.

Phase-II – Engineering Services (Mains) Examination (Traditional Type Papers).

Phase-III – Personality Test.

Eligibility for Engineering Services Exam

Your age should be between 21 years to 30 years as on 1st January of the exam year. Age relaxation is present as per government rules.

You must be a graduate in Engineering from a recognized University. Final year students can also appear in the ESE exam.

What is the difference between ESE and IES?

Following the petition, UPSC changed the Indian Engineering Services to Engineering Services Examination. ESE stands for Engineering Stream. For non-technical streams, the name remained IES which stands for Indian Engineering Service. Hence, till now the coaching institutes used to call it IES instead of ESE.

Which branch is best for IES?

If you are interested for IES (Indian Engineering Services) then you can opt for Civil Engineering. IES is conducted by UPSC every year it is one of the part of civil services. Students from Civil/Electrical/Mechanical/Electronics and Communication Engineering branches can write the IES entrance exam conducted by UPSC.
