The mission began in 2005, Full implementation was targeted for 2012. Once fully implemented, there should be “one hope in every village” in India.
Accredited Social Health Activists Selection
The ASHA should primarily be a female resident of the village that has been selected for the service, who are likely to reside in that village in the near future. Married, widowed or divorced women are given preference over women who are not yet married, as Indian cultural norms dictate that after marriage a woman leaves her village and goes to her husband. The ASHA’s preference for selection is that they must have passed class X, preferably between the ages of 25 and 45, and be selected and accountable to by the Gram Panchayat (local government).
